The difficulty level determines how tough the game is. The concept is expanded further in Hitman: Blood Money which introduced 4 difficulty levels. Generally, higher levels mean more intelligent enemies, lesser health points, limited saves, lesser information shown on map, etc.

Hitman: Codename 47 Difficulty LevelsEdit

Hitman: Codename 47 has 3 difficulty levels, easy, normal and hard, and unlike the other games in the series, these affect only combat ability.

  • Accommodating AI.
  • Very high amount of health.
  • Unlimited saves.
  • No notoriety impact.

  • Some Agency assistance.
  • Normal AI.
  • Quite high amount of health.
  • 7 saves per level.

  • Low Agency assistance.
  • Increased AI behavior.
  • Fairly low amount of health.
  • Evidence will impact your mission rating.
  • 2 saves per level in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and Hitman: Contracts.
  • 3 saves per level in Hitman: Blood Money.

  • Silencer type 1 may still attract NPCs.
  • Only you, VIPs, optional targets and the main targets are visible on your map...

Hitman: Absolution Difficulty levelsEdit

Absolution has five difficulty levels. They are:

  • Easy
    • Players can activate additional checkpoints.
    • Instinct regenerates.
    • Instinct will provide hints.
    • Enemies react very slowly.
    • In-game description: Supreme training and a physique enhanced beyond ordinary human capacity mean that your enemies are no match for you. By cunning or by brute force you are unstoppable.
  • Normal
    • Players can activate additional checkpoints.
    • Instinct does not regenerate.
    • Instinct will provide hints.
    • Normal enemy presence with normal reaction times.
    • In game description: You can rely on Agent 47's superior training and instinct. Remaining completely unnoticed can be a challenge, but you can always rely on your guns to get you out of trouble.
  • Hard
    • Players can activate additional checkpoints.
    • Instinct depletes when used and does not regenerate.
    • No Instinct hints.
    • Additional enemies with improved reaction times.
    • In-game description: You like a challenge and your enemies will provide you with just that. They will be more numerous and with faster reactions. Evading your enemies will be difficult and you must strike with flawless timing.
  • Expert
    • No player-activated checkpoints.
    • Instinct depletes when used and does not regenerate.
    • No Instinct hints.
    • Maximum number of enemies with fastest reaction times.
    • In-game description: You fight for every inch of progress, often without firing a single bullet. You don't rely on any help and accept trying many times before reaching your target...and perfection.
  • Purist (see below).

Purist (Hitman: Absolution only)Edit

Identical to Expert difficulty and Professional difficulty from previous games, but the entire HUD has been removed except for a crosshair and Instinct Mode can only be used very sparingly. Also, no tutorials at the first mission.

  • No Help and HUD
  • No Guide
  • Only a crosshair to help you aim
  • In-game description: This is a challenge for a true perfectionist. You know every rule, every detail, and all environments by heart. Even then you will die trying.

Difficulty changes will also provide extra score multipliers. The harder the difficulty, the bigger the multiplier is, completion of each challenge grants you 5% score multiplier. Also, the tactical challenges are unavailable on Easy difficulty.

HITMAN™ (2016) Edit

Surprisingly, difficulty levels do not appear in HITMAN, and it is unknown whether or not they will be implemented in the future. However, the game can be heavily modified through the settings, and the HUD can be turned off completely, making the game similar to Hitman: Absolution's Purist mode, but without the extra enemies or level changes.

Opportunities Edit

Opportunities can be turned to ON, MINIMUM or OFF. If turned ON, the game lets the players to follow certain tactics throughout the level, and shows each step with a waypoint and on the map. This could be considered the Easy difficulty, as the game "holds the hand" of the player.

If set to MINIMUM, the game only adds the steps to the map, thus allowing free exploration but still provides hints if stuck.

If set to OFF, the player receives no hints whatsoever, requiring the player to create their own tactics.

Notable HUD settings Edit

Both Instinct Mode and Minimap can be turned off.

The player can turn off NPC icons. This means that the player receives no help on determining which enemies are "Enforcers" and can see through 47's disguise(s). The attention arrow can also be turned off, meaning that the player receives no warning when a NPC is about to detect 47.
