The difficulty level determines how tough the game is. The concept is expanded further in Hitman: Blood Money that introduced 4 difficulty levels. Generally, higher levels mean more intelligent enemies, lesser health points, limited saves, lesser information shown on map, etc.

Hitman: Codename 47 Difficulty Levels

Hitman: Codename 47 has 3 difficulty levels, easy, normal and hard, and unlike the other games in the series, these affect only combat ability.
Rookie (Hitman: Blood Money only)

- Full Agency assistance
- Accommodating AI
- Very high amount of health
- Unlimited saves
- No notoriety impact
Normal
Edit
- Some Agency assistance
- Normal AI
- Quite high amount of health
- 7 saves per level
Expert
Edit
- Low Agency assistance
- Increased AI behavior
- Fairly low amount of health
- Evidence will impact your mission rating
- 2 saves per level in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin and Hitman: Contracts
- 3 saves per level in Hitman: Blood Money
Professional (or Pro in game)

- Minimal Agency assistance
- Advanced AI behavior
- Very low health - for example, one shotgun blast will almost kill you
- Evidence will impact rating
- No saves permitted
- Silencer type 1 may still attract NPCs
- Only you, VIPs, optional targets and the main targets are visible on your map.
Purist (Hitman: Absolution only)

Identical to Professional, but the entire HUD has been removed except for a crosshair and Instinct Mode can only be used very sparingly.
Hitman: Absolution Difficulty levels

Absolution has five difficulty levels.[1] They are:
- Easy
- Players can activate additional checkpoints
- Instinct regenerates
- Instinct will provide hints
- Enemies react more slowly than normal
- Normal
- Players can activate additional checkpoints
- Instinct does not regenerate
- Instinct will provide hints
- Normal enemy presence with normal reaction times
- Hard
- Players can activate additional checkpoints
- Instinct depletes when used and does not regenerate
- No Instinct hints
- Additional enemies with improved reaction times
- Expert
- No player can activate checkpoints
- Instinct depletes when used and does not regenerate
- No Instinct hints
- Maximum number of enemies with faster reaction times
- Purist (see above)
Difficulty changes will also provide extra score multipliers. The harder the difficulty, the bigger the multiplier is.
