Hitman is the next video game in the Hitman franchise. It was officially announced on 16 January 2014 in an open letter from IO Interactive to the fans of the series. It is to be released digitally on December 8, 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.[1] Retail editions are to be released in 2016. [2]

Features

Based on existing gameplay trailers, the following changes seem to have been since the previous game, Hitman: Absolution:

  • According to the developers, the game will NOT be a complete reboot or a prequel, instead the game will focus more on delivering better sandbox mechanics in a wide variety of huge maps.
  • The game will be released in a digital format at first with content coming out for free at a later date. Players can still opt to wait for the boxed version of the game which will contain all of the content released in the digital version. New episodes will be released frequently, featuring new locations, new targets, new weapons, new storylines and more.
  • Much like earlier games, the overall story will not be the driving force of the game, and each target will have their own story. However, the story does take place AFTER Absolution.
  • Frisk checkpoints have been reintroduced.
  • Contracts Mode from Absolution will return with revamped mechanics and special events for players to compete against each other in their own custom missions.
  • Each episode will also include missions that will only be available for a limited time to all players. If the player chooses not to undertake these extra missions or eliminate these targets before they suspect 47 will come after them, these targets will dissappear forever in that gameplay session.
  • Instead of HUD prompts and alerts, 47 will now receive live updates during missions via earpiece communication with Diana Burnwood.
  • The classic blueprint type map from pre-Absolution Hitman games will return.
  • Every level will now have a specific set of NPCs marked as "observant", meaning that these NPCs will be the only ones to see through your disguises. These NPCs will be shown on the minimap or the blueprint map.
  • 47 can use now a crowbar or the lockpick to open doors. The crowbar will unlock doors faster, but it will raise suspicion, alerting anyone nearby. The lockpick is the obvious silent (and more time consuming) approach.
  • The checkpoint system from Absolution will NOT return. However, the player can quick save any time on the easier difficulties.
  • The Instinct feature will make a return, albeit this time it will be severely toned down and will only show certain points of interest and highlight enemies.
  • In the same trailer, 47 is seen drowning a target in a toilet during a Contracts mode assassination. It's unknown if this means the same killing method will be available on all toilets or if it was just limited to that particular stage.

Development

Hitman was in development by Square Enix Montreal, a newly established studio headed by veteran IO Interactive employee of 11 years, Karsten Lund. It is now however currently in development by IO Interactive according to a Square Enix representative.[3]

Square Enix Montreal who were originally working on the next Hitman will now only develop games for Smart Devices.[4]

No subtitle has been officially confirmed, but there is possible trademark for the name, "Hitman: Profession" which was filed in Europe in December 2011. In addition, the Steam gameplay stats also report that a game named "Hitman PRO" was played by a small amount of players.

Absolution game director Tore Blystad mentioned in an interview with IGN before IO took over the project IO would still be working alongside SE Montreal on certain elements of the next Hitman title. "They will feed off each other, as well as some things that stand out. I think with these big franchises it takes a long time to develop just one game. If you can, work a little bit in parallel at least and help each other out." Tore also stated rather than doing the same thing again Square Enix Montreal would have shown another take on Agent 47 from a fresh perspective.[5][6]

A rumor prevailed that three developers from IO would be moving to Montreal from Denmark to help out with the project. This was before IO announced that they would be taking full control over the project. [7]
